7 Ways to Successfully Manage International Teams

Geographical barriers today are becoming increasingly irrelevant in the business world. This is largely due to the rise of communication technology that has made. It very easy for companies to start hiring internationally. The massive impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic has made remote work more relevant than ever before. While it had a huge impact on trade, it did nonetheless enable corporations to realize that they can now hire from much bigger talent pools from all over the world. However, there is a flip side to it as well. As corporations hire from all around the globe, time zone, communication issues, as well as cultural differences are now all challenges that they must overcome in order to manage their international teams successfully. You will have to create a remote work policy and figure out how to regulate it so that no one feels at a disadvantage. Here, your policy will determine individual work hours as per the separate time zones of the workforce. It should also give leeway for social, cultural, and religious festivals. It would be unfair (for instance) to call meetings in different time zones to suit a specific group of people. Similarly, you will have to take care of all of the social obligations of your teammates, all over the world.

  • Promote diversity initiatives

All managers and staffers should aim to attend diversity-training classes. If they are not available, then you should make it a point of arranging them in your organization. This way, not only will everyone be able to learn from each other but also get to know each other too. It will help eliminate feelings of inequality across the board. 

  • Use cutting-edge tools to make it easy to work online

There are many tools to ensure seamless connectivity for remote teams. From Trello to Google Docs to Zoom, there exist a veritable plethora of apps and online tools that will help you to manage your team from just about anywhere in the world. 

  • Define your core corporate values

Even if all the members of your team are working from remote geographical locations, it is imperative that they should have clear-cut knowledge about the overall team structure and the myriad corporate values of your organization. This would be essential to bridging the huge physical gap. They must know the core details of the organizational flow chart so they would know who they report to, and who is responsible for which duties.  It is the responsibility of the management to teach them their core duties and emphasize corporate values. 

  • Communicate regularly

Frequent communication is critically important for even real-world teams. However, it becomes far more important when you have to lead multiple global teams. In fact, regularly scheduled meetings are very important for the various team members to exchange knowledge, and information and also to learn from each other’s valuable experiences.
