Is an online MSN FNP program worth it?

Read Time:3 Minute, 8 Second

Are you an RN that is considering an online MSN FNP program? The first question to answer is whether you believe that a Master’s degree will be worth it. Obtaining an MSN degree takes between two and three years.

If you are trying to decide between an online program and an in-person program, there are many factors to consider. The deciding factor for many people faced with this decision is if they need to continue working full-time or not.

Advantages of an online MSN FNP program

Enrolling in an online program in order to get your FNP is a great option. This works very well for continuing students who still need to work or have other time-consuming obligations. Online programs offer a lot more flexibility than their in-person counterparts. In fact, many people opt for an online program even if they don’t have outside responsibilities such as work or childcare.

Another advantage to an online program is that you can enroll in a program outside of your home area. This can open you up to additional educational opportunities and allow you to choose the program that best meets your needs. Not having to go to a school in your immediate area can allow you to participate in a program that offers a specialized program or has a deep focus on one of your areas of interest. It can be more convenient to attend online courses and, in some cases, you may be able to complete your coursework at your own pace.

Juggling home life, work, and school can be difficult for those without an extended support network. But, if it is something that you can do remotely, it is worth the time. As online programs become more widely accepted and respected, there are few reasons to not give this option some serious consideration.

Advantages of an in-person MSN FNP program

The main advantage of in-person programs is the interaction that you get with both faculty members as well as the other students. For RNs who are able to take substantial time off from work and other responsibilities, this can be a great option. Many people are unable to take part in in-person programs due to work obligations and proximity. There are a number of very well-respected FNP programs, but they are not in all areas of the country. If there is a program in your area that offers the courses that you want, it makes sense to consider this option.

Taking two to three years off from work is another factor to consider. Temporarily leaving the workforce to enroll in an FNP program takes a lot of dedication. On the plus side, solely focusing on your Master’s degree can allow you to achieve your degrees in a shorter amount of time. It can also allow you to participate in internships or other on-the-job learning opportunities.
