The Art of Quilt Making – Getting Started in Quilting

Read Time:5 Minute, 5 Second

Quilting is a work of art, and you’re going to want yours to be as good looking as possible. But if your skill level is limited, here are a few things you can do right away that will help you learn the basic skills necessary for creating beautiful quilts.  You should also check out our other free how-to articles on learning to sew, designing crafts, or even starting an online craft business.

If you have some experience with quilting or sewing machines, then this article isn’t applicable in any way, shape, or form. However, there’s nothing wrong with having just a little bit of knowledge before diving into something like quilting — it helps!

After all, we’ve all seen people who know very little about anything but think they’re experts because they wear nice clothes or drive fancy cars. Let’s jump right in and make some quilts together.

What You’ll Need

A computer with Internet access
An electric sewing machine
Patterns and instructions
Creativity and imagination
A willingness to experiment and try new techniques

How To Make A Basic Block

Now that I’ve made my first block, I’m ready to move on to more complicated projects. Here’s another easy pattern called “Turtle.” This one measures 30″ square.

I cut two pieces of green fabric measuring 7 1/2 x 4 3/4 inches each. Then I sewed three sides of both squares together using matching thread. Next, I folded over the fourth side once to create the top edge. Now I turned under everything twice to match up the seams. Once again, I used a needle to sew along those edges so they would stay matched.

This step may sound tedious at first, but after doing it several times, you’ll find yourself getting faster and quicker at it. Try not to rush through these steps though, since every second counts when working with needles and pins. Once these four blocks were done, I pinned them together to see how well they fit together. Not bad!

Next time around, I’d probably use different fabrics and colours, maybe adding a border, too. Remember that no matter what type of project you decide to tackle, you needn’t always start with the simplest design. There’s absolutely no rule saying you must begin with something simple. Experimentation is part of what makes quilting such a fun activity.

Create Your Patterns

When you’re comfortable with constructing basic blocks, it’s now time to put your newfound skills to work creating patterns of your choosing. Don’t worry if you don’t yet know much about algebraic equations — simply pick a theme that appeals to you and go from there.

For example, perhaps you love dogs and want to come up with a unique pattern featuring cute puppies running amuck among the rows and columns of coloured yarn. You can find a variety of free quilting patterns ideas here.

Or perhaps you love birds and want to show off your newly discovered talents with designs based upon feathered friends. Whatever the case may be, keep in mind that it doesn’t necessarily have to involve animals. Just choose whatever topic captures your attention and run wild with ideas.
Here are a couple of samples of my dog catchers:

As you can tell, I didn’t follow a specific pattern. Instead, I decided to play around until I found something that appealed to me aesthetically. Keep in mind that you shouldn’t feel constrained by rules either. Sometimes it’s best to leave certain elements alone and allow creativity to dictate its course.

Don’t Limit Yourself

Another thing to remember is that you aren’t restricted to only using pre-made materials. Take this sample below which was created entirely out of scraps leftover from previous projects.

It’s important to note that while you certainly won’t end up with stunning results every single time, the most successful quilters tend to be highly creative individuals. We often hear stories of great designers whose names become synonymous with particular types of quilts. That being said, sometimes it takes trial and error to figure out exactly what you want to accomplish. When you’ve finally arrived at a design concept that pleases you, stick with it. One of the major benefits of quilting is that you generally get to enjoy a finished product that has been tailored specifically to suit your tastes.

Just remember that when you give up control, there’s bound to be room for improvement. At least that’s true for anyone involved in any artistic endeavour. As long as you remain open to critique, you’ll likely never stop growing as a designer.

Ready-Made Fabric Crafts And Projects

While many beginners prefer to spend their initial efforts crafting items instead of wasting time trying to master complex stitching methods, others prefer to focus solely on practising their skills. Either choice is perfectly fine. The key is to pick something that suits your style and ability level.

While most people wouldn’t consider themselves professional seamstresses, almost everyone possesses the desire to make something useful. Why not harness that energy and turn it into something positive? Check out these five examples of homemade fabric crafts to inspire you to explore further.

Once you’ve mastered the basic principles of forming straight lines and piecing multiple layers together, you might want to try tackling more challenging projects like patchwork cushions and pillows.

These sorts of projects require some additional care and caution, but if you’ve got the patience to develop your craftsmanship, you can expect high-quality products.
Even if you still need a lot of practice, you should be able to complete small tasks like cutting shapes and assembling frames within weeks.

Conclusion

Once you gain confidence, you’ll soon realize that you can produce several handmade creations rather quickly. Before long you’ll be itching to share your talent with family members and friends.

So whether you opt to pursue a career in traditional quilting or fashion a completely original piece, you’ll discover that the process itself offers endless opportunities for self-expression. Best of luck on your journey!.For more details click here
